Headteacher’s Blog - 12 February 2018

Hello again

It is difficult to imagine a more eventful week than the week just gone!

Firstly, Bugsy Malone.  I am sure that nobody who was at The Coliseum Theatre last week to see our school show will forget the joy of witnessing such talent and commitment as we saw on that stage.  Nearly 80 pupils of our school either performed on stage or did sterling work backstage and all did themselves, their families and the school proud.  Many members of the audience have either written to us or have told us on the night that the quality of the production would have graced any professional stage and I totally agree.  I warmly congratulate them one and all and thank them for their hard work and for the pleasure that their efforts brought to so many of us.  I would also like to issue my personal thanks to all the pupils for their restraint in only hitting me with one pie in the face!

Further thanks must, of course, go to all of my colleagues who did so much to get this show onto the stage.  It was a genuinely collaborative effort which involved several departments and this, again, reveals so much that is outstanding about the spirit and community of our school.  A bright future lies ahead for all of these young people and we all look forward with eager anticipation to next year’s show.

On a similar note I would like to congratulate Taylor Jones of Year 10 for his selection to play football for Welsh Schoolboys next month.  This is a fantastic achievement and we all wish him well for the matches and for his future career.

As you will now be aware, the school is due to be inspected by ESTYN during the week beginning March 5th.  Information regarding this has been issued to parents via pupil post earlier this week including details of questionnaires and the parents meeting which will be held by members of the inspection team between 5-6 pm on Monday March 5th.  We are, as you will know if you are a regular reader of this blog, extremely proud of so much that we do here and of the work of so many of our pupils and of my colleagues.  We are therefore looking forward to showing the school in its best possible light and to welcoming our visitors from ESTYN with the same warmth that all visitors to our school receive.  We will work with them in helping them arrive at their judgements and I am sure that they will give us a helpful steer towards the brightest possible future for Aberdare Community School.

This week sees the unveiling of a collaborative project undertaken in the Autumn Term by the History and Art departments.  Three murals commemorating the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War will be put on permanent display in the corridor on the 2nd floor of the school.  This exceptional piece of art is the product of the hard work and talent of pupils in Year 9, my colleagues in the respective departments and our technology technicians.  Congratulations and many thanks to all involved.

Due to unforeseen circumstances I will have to amend the times of my drop-in session on Wednesday.  It will now run from 5-6.30 pm.  Please accept my apologies if this has caused any inconvenience.
